February Homeschool Happenings

As I look back over the past few weeks, I'm not exactly sure what happened to my blogging. It took me a long while (longer than I anticipated) to get back into the groove of homeschooling, housework, etc, after the holiday break.

At the beginning of February, Lauren got sick with what seemed to be a GI bug. She spent a few nights in the hospital so that she could get rehydrated, and she's been resting on the couch ever since. I've been able to catch up on some cleaning, read some books, and even do some crocheting.

What I've been reading:

I finished reading Loves God, Likes Girls by Sally Gary and Say Goodbye to Survival Mode by Crystal Paine. I'm in the middle of Messy Grace by Caleb Kaltenbach. I also read The Secret Keepers, a children's book by Trenton Lee Stewart. Stewart's Mysterious Benedict Society and sequels have long been favorites in our house, and The Secret Keepers is almost as good.

For read-alouds, Lauren and I are still making our way through Anne of Green Gables. We're only a chapter or two away from the end, but she hasn't felt up to listening for quite some time. This book turned out to be a bit too advanced for her to understand, but she hasn't wanted to quit in the middle. We'll pick something with less big words and flowery descriptions for our next read-aloud.

What we've been playing:

Pandemic continues to be a huge hit at our house. Even while Lauren has been sick, she's sometimes begged me to set up the game board on the floor near the couch so that we can play without her having to actually get up. She also talked me into buying the iPad version so that she can play while we're at appointments. One morning we ended up playing a game during her blood draw and it kept her distracted the whole time.

What we've been studying:

It's less than three weeks away from the regional Science Olympiad tournament so we're studying lots of science. Unfortunately, Lauren hasn't felt like studying much and I'm starting to feel like she's slipping behind. Brennan's still perfecting his robot arm and hovercraft for the competition. His team stands an excellent chance of going to the state competition in April so it looks like he'll be studying for quite a while longer.

What I've been cleaning:

I'm following with Michele's 34 Weeks of Clean series on Family, Faith and Fridays. So far, the majority of the assignments have been in the kitchen. My kitchen has never looked better. In some of my free time (while Lauren rests and watches YouTube videos), I've also organized the huge stack medical paperwork from last year, decluttered some unloved clothing in my closet, and just generally tidied up the rest of the house.

Other excitement:

Brennan found a private school baseball team that he can play with this spring, and he's eagerly gone to a few pre-season practices already.

Lauren was selected to be an Ambassador for the Children's Hospital Colorado Foundation, and we had a fun morning at the Children's Museum in Denver for a kick-off celebration with interviews, a photo shoot, and more. They've already shared her story on the website, and she'll have the opportunity to participate in several publicity activities this year. Here's one of my favorite pictures from that day:

This long overdue update is going to be shared with the weekly Homeschool Highlights linky at Homeschool Coffee Break. Come join the fun!

  1. I haven't heard of the game Pandemic. But I want to check into it. I read Anne of Green Gables for the first time last year. I really enjoyed it! Actually I listened to it now that I think about it! I like to work in an audible book now and then. You sound like you are really busy!! Happy Valentine's Day! I see you are a military family. I sent my grandson off to basic training today! We are now #Army Proud

  2. My daughter has really loved The Mysterious Benedict Society books, so she was looking at The Secret Keepers too. Will have to get that for her. Congratulations to Lauren on her ambassador role - that's a great picture! Thanks for sharing your update on Homeschool Highlights!
