A military-wife's dilemma

This afternoon I braved the Commissary -- shortly after payday and just before a major holiday. Perhaps not one of my brightest moments.

I left the Commissary with two carts of groceries and tipped the bagger who had painstakingly arranged all of my bags in the back of my van. I looked at the clock. 4:55.

It only takes about a minute to get from the Commissary to the nearest gate. I had intended to go out the gate on the other side of the base because it's just a bit quicker to get home. That other gate is roughly five minutes from the Commissary.

At 5:00, all traffic will completely stop while the National Anthem is broadcast over the loudspeakers on base.

I decided to go to the gate that was further away. I wouldn't mind being delayed for a few minutes to listen to The Star Spangled Banner.

As it turned out, I made it through the gate just seconds before the music started. When I glanced back in my rearview mirror, I saw a member of the security forces standing at attention in the middle of the road at the gate I had just driven through.

I was a bit sad that I didn't get to hear the music today.

  1. Ha, ha, that is my life, too! We also braved the commissary today, against my better judgment. It wasn't too bad, though!! :-)

  2. I hope you all are staying safe with the heat and wildfires. (I know they and you are in Arizona but I'm not sure where) God Bless You all.
