Read-Aloud Challenge, June 2nd

I'm once again linking up with my friend Debra at Footprints in the Butter to report what I've been reading aloud to my children.

Addison, Brennan, and I finished My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George this afternoon. Now that we're settling into a rhythm of reading aloud after lunchtime, we can sometimes read two or three chapters in a sitting. I don't know what book is next on our list -- we never did The Incredible Journey and I know we have other options on our shelves.

Lauren's back on her Junie B. Jones kick. Yesterday and today, I read Junie B., First Grader: Aloha-ha-ha! to her. Twice -- once each day. We've done fairly well reading picture books of my choosing lately (most of which I picked based on the recommendations in Read for the Heart). I need to find a good chapter book  to introduce to her. I remember reading Charlotte's Web to both of the big kids when they were roughly her age. Maybe I'll pull my tattered copy off the shelves once again.

  1. You know, I am nearly certain I've never read My Side of the Mountain... that has always been on my list of books I ought to read.

Love that you have an after lunch reading routine. I need to see to it that that happens next week...

  2. I think we're going to institute Reading Time this summer. It may not be out loud, but with everyone having a reading list this summer, it may be the only way to get them done.

The last read-aloud I did was Mr. Popper's Penguins with Matthew. He now wants to see the movie, but JUST me and him, tyvm, since that's "our" book.

  3. Meg, I'd really, really recommend trying to do some read-alouds while you have your big kids home for the summer. I can't even begin to tell you all the benefits of reading to them. I think you can have a separate reading to yourself time every day too.
