Jokes, Juggling, and Just Plain Silliness

When I'm stumped for a blog idea, I sometimes ask my children to help me brainstorm. For this week's letter J theme, I had more than one idea that I wanted to use.

Jokes:

Addison suggested that I tell about how Brennan used to make up the goofiest jokes when he was younger. For instance, "Why did the chicken cross the road?" "Because ice cream is yummy." Somehow we always ended up laughing hysterically at the pure absurdity of it all.

Juggling:

When Lauren was in the hospital waiting for her heart transplant, she made friends with a lot of the nurses. One nurse in particular used to entertain her by juggling extra rolls of tape while he took her vital signs. One day she started talking to him in the hallway and asked him to juggle for her. He asked what he should juggle, and she answered, "Pagers." He responded that he only had one and that she'd have to find two more people that didn't mind if theirs got dropped. She turned around, pretended to pick something up off of a nearby counter, and handed him two imaginary pagers. I was definitely laughing out loud when he then juggled the "three" pagers by tossing his from one hand to the other.

Just Plain Silliness:

Every one in a while, someone in our family will say something that makes someone else think of a song (or a crazy variation of a song) and we'll all chime in.

For years, we've played out a scene from the Lion King play out while I'm fixing dinner. It's the scene where Scar is talking to the hyenas about his plan to take over the kingdom. Scar declares, "Be prepared!" and the hyenas ask, "For what?" Scar answers, "For the death of the king" and the hyenas are still confused. In our house, the remaining lines in the scene are changed to reflect the potential for a meal without sweet tea.
"No tea, no tea, la, la, la, la, la, la."
"Idiots! There will be tea."
"But you said. . . "
"I will make tea, and you'll never go thirsty again!"

Often our family is busy rushing around and we're more crazy than funny. Other times, the crazy is funny. I hope I never get so busy that I forget to laugh.

Ben and MeI'm sharing a "years ago" story corresponding to each letter of the alphabet for the Blogging through the Alphabet challenge hosted by Marcy at Ben and Me. I often tell my children stories of things that have happened in our past, and now I'm taking the time to write down those stories.

  1. I LOVE some of the jokes my kids say...they make no sense, which makes them even funnier. Jude's current favorite is "What do you call a cow with no legs?" He barely gets out "Ground beef!" through the giggles.

Luke's new favorite is one Neal told him: Why are there no knock-knock jokes about the 4th of July?

    Because freedom rings. (ba-dum-dum)

Sometimes, you just have to laugh, or you'll go crazy.

  2. Love it Cristi! How fun to remember family times together. I have a family that turns EVERY cnversation into a movie quote fest! Sometims with the real words, other times, we just make up our own as well. Glad to know we are not the only ones! ;)
