Breastmilk Storage

After Lauren's first few days of life, Tim went back to work and usually went to visit with her sometime in the middle of the day. Often he would change into exercise clothes and run from his job at the Pentagon up to the hospital in Bethesda, MD. After visiting with Lauren for a bit, he would then take the Metro back to work.

Meanwhile my primary job was to recover from the c-section and to pump breastmilk for Lauren.

One day, I asked him if he'd bring me home some more milk containers. (I can't remember if I had forgotten to get them when I was there or if I wasn't able to visit that day or what.) Anyway, the nurses gathered up a couple dozen containers for him to bring home to me.

He didn't think much about it as he took the clear plastic bag of cups with him as he left the hospital. He sure did get a lot of strange looks on the Metro as he sat down with an entire garbage bag full of "Specimen Containers" -- the type most commonly used for urine samples.

That was probably the last time he brought me anything home from the NICU.

Ben and MeI'm sharing a "years ago" story corresponding to each letter of the alphabet for the Blogging through the Alphabet challenge hosted by Marcy at Ben and Me. I often tell my children stories of things that have happened in our past, and now I'm taking the time to write down those treasured stories.

  4. This made me chuckle. Mostly because I've both handed out those specimen jars to breastfeeding mommas AND ridden on the Metro. I can just imagine Tim carrying those home!
